we start this noon with breaking news out of oakland. the woman who murdered the bay area nursing student michelle lay will spent 25 years behind bars. the 29-year-old was sentenced about an hour ago in an oakland courtroom. prosecutors argued she planned the measure murder for months because they thought leigh was involved with her ex-boyfriend. >> it has been a long two years. we were able to talk about michelle as a person and recount how we felt when she was murdered. it meant a lot to us. >> we are glad that some form of justice has been served. >> that is the attorney, admitting she killed le but asked for a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter saying she acted in the heat of passion. >>> two men cheated death twice this morning when their truck hit a power line in san leandro and burst into flames. we have more on the split second decision that saved their lives there. >> reporter: this truck is just a shell of itself. it was filled with uniforms and 150-gallons of fuel. it caught on fire after snagging a high voltage power line creating a dangerous situation for the you

of oakland raiders head coach dennis allen has died. allen had been away from the team since sunday to be with his father in the dallas area. we are told 66-year-old grady allen died last night from heart complications. he was a linebacker for the falcons from 1968 to 1972. dennis allen does plan though to return to oakland to coach thursday's home game against the denver broncos. >>> activists on both side of the gay marriage issue on california are learning to be patient. it turns out a prop 8 appeal will be on the u.s. supreme court justices' agenda again this friday. but it doesn't mean they will act on it. the court has no deadline for acting on cases. the court made the announcement this morning saying several gay marriage appeals are still on the table. friday is the fourth time that prop 8 and other cases concerning the "defense of marriage act" will be on the justices' agenda. we should know by friday afternoon or next monday morning if the judges issue an order this time. >>> a federal judge is blocking the state from enforcing its gay therapy law set to go into effect on

prompted many gun owners in the bay area to turn in their wells. over the weekend san francisco and oakland had gun buy-back events. more than 600 guns were turned in too police officers. gun owners got $200 in exchange. the event was so popular the officers had to give out ious. both locations saw crowds twice as large as expected. >>> and in headlines around the bay area, san francisco police are looking for three suspects in a home invasion robbery. the men charged into the home in the 1600 block of sloat boulevard about 2:00 in the morning. police say the family was tied up and robbed. the suspects got away with about $500 in cash. but nobody was hurt. >>> and a plan to make berkeley a "no drone" zone goes up for a vote this week. the city council is expected to take up the issue tomorrow. drones, unmanned aircraft, are used by the department of homeland security to watch over u.s. ports and international borders. the fbi and about a dozen police and sheriff's departments also have them but critics say that the drones are an invasion of privacy. >>> coming up, they jumped into action to

in santa rosa. overnight lows again going to be cool, 30s in some places, mid-40s. 41 oakland. 38 in fremont. so here's your forecast over the next several days. this is going to be our wet day unsettled weather continuing until dark. and then things clear out of here and then thursday, that is our dry break. friday into saturday, that's when the unsettled weather comes back. chance of rain continues through saturday about midday. and then sunday through new year's day actually looks like dry weather. yeah, for new year's eve. if you are doing any skiing towards the sierra, pack your chains because they got some good ski conditions. chance of more snow saturday over at alpine meadows. they have about 16" there. about a foot of new snow over at heavenly. they have 27 lifts ready to go open to the public. northstar more snow saturday and they have good powder with 18 lifts open to the public. >> i love skiing so fresh powder, that's great. >> get you up to tahoe. >> we should. got to get you up there. >>> thank you. >>> all year long they make a difference in our community. how you

to mid-50s kind of similar actually to yesterday around this time. 54 in oakland. 52 in fremont. 52 in san rafael. and 51 out in livermore. by later on this afternoon. your overnight temperatures cool, as well. not quite freezing but look at some of of these temperatures in the valleys, fairfield 34 as well as livermore. a little milder in san francisco, going to see mid-40s overnight tonight. so here's your forecast over the next several days. this is the dry break today and then your own settled weather returns to the bay area friday into saturday morning. looks like we are going to stay dry sunday through new year's day and then more wet weather returns by wednesday. so this would be the day if you want to head up towards the sierra. the roads are looking good right now. but they are expecting more snow out by heavenly. chance of of snow by saturday. 27 lifts open to the public. kirkwood got 25 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours. 10 lifts open and great skiing conditions over at squaw. chance of more snow once again friday and saturday. they got 20" right now. and a lot of l
